Nobody wants to hear they need a repipe.
Sometimes a leak is just a leak. Other times you fix one spot and then another leak shows up a few months later.
If your Raleigh home has rusty water, weak pressure, galvanized pipe, polybutylene, or old water lines with too many repairs, we can come look at it and tell you what makes sense.
We see this a lot in older Raleigh homes. One leak gets fixed. Then another one shows up in the ceiling, crawlspace, wall, or around a bathroom.
At some point it is worth looking at the whole water piping system instead of paying for one repair at a time.
A whole house repipe means replacing the old water lines in the home. Some houses are easier than others. Crawlspace homes are usually different than slab homes. Two-story homes need more planning.
We look at how the pipe runs, where the fixtures are, where shutoffs are, and what has already been repaired before we tell you what we would do.
Plain answer: if the same plumbing system keeps leaking, replacing the bad pipe may be cheaper than opening walls over and over.
A lot of homeowners call us because an inspection found polybutylene. Sometimes it has already leaked. Sometimes they are trying to deal with it before selling, buying, or remodeling.
Old galvanized water pipe can close up inside. That is when people start noticing bad pressure, rusty water, or slow flow at showers and sinks.
One pinhole leak may just need a repair. But when they keep showing up in different areas, the homeowner usually wants to talk about replacing more of the system.
Older CPVC can get brittle. We check the fittings, past repairs, and access before saying what we think.
Near Five Points, we looked at a house where the owner already had a few ceiling repairs from old leaks. They were getting ready to put money into the kitchen and did not want another water line breaking after the work was done.
In North Raleigh, a homeowner called about weak pressure in two bathrooms. It was not just a shower head. The older piping was part of the problem.
Around Midtown, we have seen crawlspaces with repair after repair added over the years. Sometimes the cleaner answer is to stop patching and run new water lines the right way.
We are not going to tell every customer they need a whole house repipe. That is not how it works.
If one fitting is leaking, repair it. If the home has old pipe and leaks keep moving from one spot to another, then it is time to talk about replacement.
